Baby born on a plane: what's next?

Even considering the fact that we have already seen some amazing this and events on the USA, the truth is that I have never seen a baby born on a plane just like it has just happened now on Malaysia! Read the msnbc.com article below for further details:

"

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - A Malaysian woman who gave premature birth to a boy on board an airplane minutes before it landed will get free flights for life along with her child, an airline official said Friday.

Liew Siaw Hsia, 31, gave birth on budget carrier AirAsia's flight from Penang to Kuching on Wednesday.

AirAsia spokesman Nazatul Mokhtar said Friday that the flight was diverted to nearby Kuala Lumpur for an emergency landing when Liew started labor pains. He says Liew was 27 weeks pregnant, 11 weeks short of the full term.

A doctor on the flight helped the woman deliver while the plane was still 2,000 feet in the air in its final approach to land.

Mother and son were rushed to a nearby hospital after the plane landed, an airline statement said. Their condition late Friday was unknown, though Nazatul said earlier that they were both in good shape.

Nazatul says both Liew and her son will get lifetime of free flights.

New diesel generators

Even considering the fact that I am a woman who doesn’t have much time to spend at home dealing with the general problems and required house maintenance, the fact is that I am the one who makes the decisions of the required purchases for the house and when they are done.

Keeping this in mind, I recently had to buy a new Diesel Generator for my house because it tends to require a lot of energy as it is enormous, making it absolutely mandatory for me to look for the best deals on diesel generators and Generator Enclosures. Moreover, I recently had to buy a Diesel Generator for my company too so that we could replace the old one, which was already malfunctioning and menacing the efficiency of the company. Furthermore, new diesel generators tend to be a lot more secure and trustful then the old ones that we used to have there, making the substitution process a necessity.

So, would you also like to buy a new diesel generator or any other generator enclosures that you may need? If that’s the case, then I would personally like to advise you to take some time to visit the website to which I have linked above so that you can discover the best deals on diesel generators in your own area!

Airlines raising fares once again!

As a traveler who tends to be up-to-date with the latest airlines news, the truth is that I was recently surprised with the new that airlines would be raising fares once again! In fact, I don't think that it will positively affect the economy and the airlines, meaning that it could lead to some major problems. Read the msnbc.com article just below for further details:

"

DALLAS - The last of the major network airlines matched a $10 increase in the price of many round-trip tickets, making it likely that the fare boost will stick.

By Friday, United and US Airways had matched the increase that was already in place at Delta, Continental and American, said Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, a travel Web site that tracks ticket prices.

Seaney said it was the fifth increase in U.S. ticket prices this year. Airlines sometimes roll back fare increases after a day or two, but Seaney said that was unlikely to happen this time because the major players matched the hike so quickly.

Network carriers concentrate operations at a few hub airports, with flights going out from the hub like spokes on a wheel. Low-cost carriers such as Southwest instead fly directly from one city to another, bypassing crowded hub airports.

Southwest and another low-cost airline, AirTran, had three-day fare sales that expired Thursday night and did not immediately match the $10 increase.

The price hike was the second in as many weeks. Still, with a recession and weak travel demand, airlines haven't been able to raise prices as often as they would like, and most lost money in the third quarter that ended Sept. 30.

Thomas Horton, the chief financial officer of American Airlines parent AMR Corp., said earlier this week that airlines have found some pricing power but need to boost fares more to earn a profit.

"We are not there yet, but we have had some traction and I would hope that the industry can get to a healthier place," he said.

Last year, there were 15 broad domestic fare hikes and 17 in 2007, according to FareCompare. The airlines said many of those increases were tied to jet fuel prices, which soared to record highs in July 2008 before plunging, then starting a new ascent in March.

Organizing jewelry parties

As a woman who knows how difficult it may be for us to earn some extra money to cover both our personal needs and the living expenses, I have been asking my friends about part-time jobs and home party businesses. In fact, I was recently told about AZULI SKYE - The Ultimate Home Jewelry Party and I am extremely excited with this amazing opportunity!

Moreover, just as you would expect, any jewelry party tends to be extremely amusing for you (the sales consultant) and all of your friends, meaning that the overall feeling of the jewelry party will easily be appropriate for making a major income! Furthermore, this kind of business is doing extremely well, even during this recession period and it is also probably the best way of starting your own business without having to make a major investment. In what relates to the monthly income, you can easily achieve $1000/month just by having one jewelry party a week, as these products really tend to appeal to almost everyone, making them extremely easy to sell.

Keeping in mind what was stated above and knowing that these jewels are all made in the USA (creating jobs for us), I am more than sure that you will be extremely seduced by the idea of running your own business and start to organize some jewelry parties at home! As a matter of fact, I am also extremely excited with this possibility and I am also studying the possibility of organizing some jewelry parties too!

Las Vegas shows

Do you know many of the famous performers there? If that's the case, then you definitely need to read the msnbc.com article just below for a funny story:

"

LAS VEGAS - Garth Brooks mused that the public may have moved on when he announced he was coming out of retirement.

Was he ever wrong.

Tickets for Brooks' first 20 shows at the Wynn Las Vegas resort sold out in less than five hours. The resort said Saturday it reached maximum capacity for callers at 141,934, with many getting busy signals.

Officials say the ticket Web site had more than 5.4 million page views with 40,000 waiting to buy tickets online at one point.

Brooks announced a five-year deal with casino owner Steve Wynn last week that includes 15 weeks of shows a year in the Encore theater, which seats about 1,500. Tickets were $125 plus fees.

Brooks, the best-selling solo act in history, plays Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of select weeks beginning Dec. 11.

Discovering theKentucky coal mines

Have you ever visited any coal mines before? Would you personally consider doing so if you managed to get enough reasons for it? If that's the case, then you definitely need to read the msnbc.com article just below and see how incredibly helpful it will be for you if you ever decide to visit Kentucky coal mines:

"

LYNCH, Kentucky - Joseph Marzelli is glad for the cheerful canary singing in the darkness of an Appalachian coal mine.

"As long as I can hear your song, I know I'm safe," Marzelli says in a heavy Italian accent as he explains the ins and outs of coal mining as it was done in the early days of the Industrial Revolution, when miners used canaries as air monitors.

Marzelli is one of a crew of animatronic miners who greet visitors inside Portal 31, an underground coal mine that folks here have transformed into a tourist attraction.

In broken English, Marzelli, flanked by an animatronic coal-mining mule, shares his appreciation for his new home in America and a job that, at the time, was done primarily with picks and shovels and dynamite.

"Life is bellissimo," he says.

Folks in this historic mining community share his enthusiasm after turning the old mine into the centerpiece for the budding tourism industry built around coal. Three decades after Portal 31 played out, they're hoping the mine that meanders for miles beneath Black Mountain will once again be an economic engine for Harlan County while also honoring the lives of the hard-bodied men who braved darkness and danger to eke out their livings in the Appalachians.

Local resident Terina Widner, daughter of a coal miner who was killed in an underground explosion near here, said she's convinced Portal 31 can be an economic boon for the community.

"It's very realistic," Widner said. "This is a golden opportunity. We now have the key ingredient to pull this whole recipe of cultural tourism together in Harlan County."

Going back in time
Widner and her 8-year-old son, Brett, were part of a group that boarded a railcar in early October for a tour through the reinforced tunnels.

"Keep your arms and legs inside," a voice reminds the passengers. "Remember, safety first. As you can see from the posters, it's our motto here at Portal 31. Always has been, since the mine opened in 1917."

With that said, the railcar begins to rumble down the tracks and into the darkness of the mine. It's so dark at times, passengers can't see the people sitting around them.

"Now, just so you know, we'll be going not just through the mine, but back in time ...

"Our first stop, 1919."

That's when Marzelli comes into view and the railcar comes to a stop. Depicting a recent immigrant, Marzelli leans on his pick and talks to the snorting mule. Marzelli appears lifelike in the dim light. His lips move realistically as he discusses life as a miner after the turn of 20th century.

A Welshman yells from the darkness: "Fire in the hole." Then, the rumble of an explosion. It unnerves the mule. "Easy, calmare," Marzelli says in a calming voice. "Aren't you used to that noise yet?"

The roughly 30-minute tour involves eight stops, all of which depict a different era in mining, progressing to a modern-day exhibit that shows the kind of toothy machines that continuously chew coal out of the black veins inside the Appalachians.

Reinforced for safety
The $2.5 million project was decades in the planning and involved not only the creative talents of writers and designers but also the expertise of engineers like Steve Gardner of Lexington, whose job was to ensure tourist safety.

Gardner said he limited the tour to areas of the mine that have proven safe over nearly 90 years. He added so-called roof bolts, long metal rods drilled into the overhead rock layers to provide additional stability. Then he installed a super-strength metal mesh overhead. Tunnel walls were covered with a sealant to permanently bind the coal and rock in place. Contractors also sealed off unused mine tunnels to keep methane gases out.

Gardner and other designers then ordered an overhead metal cab for the railcar for yet another level of protection in case of rock falls.

"It was not difficult to make the mine safe," Gardner said. "It was just taking care of the basics."

‘Part of the intrigue’
Phyllis Sizemore, curator at the nearby Kentucky Coal Mine Museum, said the Portal 31 tours pay homage to coal miners, past and present.

"The economic boost, that's a significant reason to do something like this," she said. "But I'm not sure that's the No. 1 reason. The thing in people's minds here all along was to not let people forget the sacrifices of the coal miners, the dedication of the people who mined coal."

The tunnels are more than 6 feet from floor to ceiling, but Gardner said people who are claustrophobic or scared of the dark may want to stay clear.

"We think that's part of the intrigue," said Bruce Ayers, president of Southeast Community College in nearby Cumberland. "We really believe in order to sustain a bona fide tourism program, you have to have one big ticket item, and we're hoping this will be the catalyst around which we can build a tourism industry."

Ayers, head of a committee that championed the Portal 31 project, said many components that made Lynch and surrounding towns a tourist destination already were in place — most of the row houses, stores, schools and churches built by coal companies in Lynch and nearby Benham and Cumberland are still standing.

Mine create U.S. ‘industrial might’
Gardner said he's hopeful some of the 1 million people who visit the nearby Cumberland Gap National Historic Park each year will decide also take in Portal 31 and other nearby sites, including the Kentucky Coal Mine Museum that now attracts about 30,000 people a year.

Locals have bought into the idea, warmly greeting visitors. Lawns are manicured. Public areas are spotless. Old miners still living here are happy to tell stories about what life was like when every able-bodied man in Lynch had a good-paying job in Portal 31. Women share what it was like to stay at home worrying while husbands and sons toiled underground.

The retired coal miners also lead the underground tours. They recount how, in 1917, the U.S. Steel Coal and Coke Co. bought 40,000 acres and formed Lynch, which was named for the company's first president, Thomas Lynch. They tell how over a 40-year span, more than 1 million tons of coal per year passed through Portal 31. And they proudly share that Lynch's tipple — the place coal is loaded onto rail cars — was the largest in the world when it was built in the early 1920s.

"In the 46 years that this mine was open, it played a pretty big part in helping create the industrial might of America in the 20th century," the tour guide says.

As the tour wraps up, the guide turns his attention to the thousands of men from 37 countries who once worked in the mine.

"They built a town and created a community," he says. "They carry the legacy of pride and perseverance that was earned through generations of hard work and mental toughness, those special traits that define the spirit of the miner, the true legacy of Portal 31."

New flights and new destinations from Denver

From your own experience you can probably tell how you feel about airlines and the way they tend to delay flights, etc but the fact is that there are also some good news as you may confirm by reading the msnbc.com article just below, which shows you how the SouthWest Airlines Inc. is preparing to offer travelers a wide range of new destinations:

"

DALLAS - Southwest Airlines Co. is adding flights and new destinations from Denver, where it has grown rapidly in three years to compete against United and Republic's Frontier Airlines.

Southwest said Thursday it would add 13 more daily flights in Denver, its fastest-growing location.

The discount airline currently operates 112 flights in Denver. That will jump to 127 with the previously announced plans to offer nonstop service to Boston, Spokane, Wash., and Reno, Nev., in January and the flights announced Thursday.

Southwest said that beginning in March it will add nonstop service from Denver to Detroit, Hartford, Conn.; Boise, Idaho; Ontario, Calif., and Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. The airline, which recently acquired two more gates at the Denver airport for a total of 12 gates, said it plans to add more flights in May.

Southwest pulled out of the old Denver airport years ago, but resumed service to the city in 2006 with 13 daily flights. This year, it made a bid to buy Frontier Airlines out of bankruptcy but withdrew when it could not get an agreement with union pilots over merging the Southwest and Frontier crews.

Frontier went instead to Republic Airways Holdings Inc. On Wednesday, Frontier announced it will launch daily nonstop service from Denver to New Orleans and Louisville, Ky., next year.

Airlines are still trying to seduce business travelers

As you would probably expect, airlines are still making a major effort in order to get the attention from the business travelers as these may play a very imporant role in their financial balance now that the recession is a real menace for most airlines. Moreover, it seems that there are some signs that the response from business travelers is not the one being expected by airlines as you may confirm by reading the msnbc.com article just below:

"

DALLAS—Airlines value premium travelers above other customers, letting them board first, eat a meal, and order a cocktail without whipping out a credit card.

Many of them are business travelers who fly frequently and often pay higher last-minute fares than the jeans-and-T-shirt crowd on the way to see grandma. Anyone who questions why airlines treat business travelers nicely only needs to look at the carriers' third-quarter financial reports.

On Wednesday, American Airlines parent AMR Corp. reported that it lost $359 million in the third quarter, and Continental Airlines Inc. posted an $18 million loss. Those results followed losses in the last few days reported by Southwest Airlines Co. and United parent UAL Corp.

Overall traffic is picking up. Planes were mostly full over the summer vacation period and through September.

But revenue at the biggest airlines plunged about one-fifth from the levels of summer 2008, largely because business travelers stayed home, grounded by cutbacks in corporate travel during the recession.

Airline executives refused to predict when demand for travel — and higher prices — might come back.

"We are bumping along the bottom," Continental President Jeff Smisek said Wednesday. "I can't tell you when the recovery will come or how quickly or at what rate business travel will return ... the recovery seems to be quite slow."

The day before, United President John Tague said there was no chance airlines could return to earlier revenue levels until they can recapture high-paying customers.

Basili Alukos, an airline analyst at Morningstar, said United is the most heavily dependent on premium passengers — business travelers and international customers — but that many airlines are feeling the effect. He said there has been a permanent change in travel habits, including more business travelers buying cheaper tickets in coach.

Alukos said some premium passengers will return as the economy improves and companies employ more people who need to travel, "but everyone is going to try to hold down their costs."

It's hard to know how many passengers are flying for business versus pleasure. Southwest has said that in good times, at least 40 percent of its customers are business travelers. It may be higher at other airlines. Alukos estimates that a little more than half of U.S. passengers are traveling on business.

At AMR, traffic in the third quarter fell about 6 percent, but revenue plummeted 20 percent. The company blamed a drop-off in business travel and low fares to entice leisure customers to American, the nation's second-largest carrier.

AMR's $359 million loss compared with profit of $31 million in the third quarter of 2008, when the Fort Worth-based company sold its investment business.

Houston-based Continental, the No. 4 U.S. airline, lost $18 million, which was a big improvement over the $230 million loss a year earlier, when jet fuel prices were roughly 50 percent higher.

Revenue plunged 20.2 percent, to $3.32 billion, despite a traffic downturn of less than 1 percent. Weak sales cut across all of Continental's markets, with trans-Atlantic business particularly sluggish.

However, Continental is betting on improvement next year. After two years of cutting capacity by eliminating flights or using smaller aircraft, the airline expects to increase capacity next year by between 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent, with all the extra flying on international routes.

While larger carriers posted losses for the quarter, low-fare AirTran Airways said Wednesday it earned $10.4 million, although revenue fell 11 percent, to $597.4 million. A year ago, the company lost $94.6 million.

AirTran has been dropping unprofitable routes and executives of the carrier, based in Orlando, Fla., said they expect to increase capacity between 2 percent and 4 percent next year.

Thanksgiving Day trips

When was the last time you enjoyed an amazing trip during the Thanksgiving Day? Would you like to know how you can easily take full advantage of the most affordable period of the last few years? If that's the case, then you definitely need to read the msnbc.com article just below and discover how much you should be prepared to spend:

"

ATLANTA - Holiday surcharges. Bag fees. Fees for just about everything. Long airport security lines. Flying might not be your cheapest, quickest or most comfortable option to travel to grandma’s house this Thanksgiving.

Consider taking the bus or Amtrak, driving or even renting a recreational vehicle for a family adventure. At an average $2.57 a gallon this week, gasoline is almost 12 percent cheaper than it was a year ago.

Still, the distance you have to travel may make the airplane route the only practical course.

“Prudent families should closely compare the cost of all modes of transportation for both price and hassle,” says Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com.

Here’s a by-the-numbers look at different modes of transportation for a family of four traveling on three routes representing a cross-section of the country on Nov. 25 and returning on Nov. 29 — and how you can save during your trip. The airfares selected were the cheapest nonstop itineraries available as of last weekend.

1. New York City to Boston.
Booking a flight on US Airways will cost you $282.20 roundtrip, including taxes and fees, per person. Add in one bag checked at the airport for each family member and that adds $200 roundtrip. Kits that includes a fleece blanket, an inflatable neck pillow, eye shades and earplugs will run you another $28 for four. Air total: $1,357.

Greyhound will get you there for $144 roundtrip. Checking a second bag for two adults will cost $40 roundtrip. Bring your own food from home for about $16, pillows and DVD player for entertainment. Bus total: $200.

Roundtrip on Amtrak will cost the family $594. Your first three checked bags are free. Hitting the dining car for specialty salads for everyone will be $72 roundtrip. Train total: $666.

You can drive the 215 miles each way for about $50 in gas roundtrip. Meals on the road will add about $80 more. No charge for entertainment you bring with you. Driving total: $130.

2. Atlanta to St. Louis.
A Delta Air Lines roundtrip flight runs the family $1,037. Roundtrip fees for one bag checked by each person at the airport adds another $160. If you want some entertainment, Wi-Fi for one laptop would be about $12 roundtrip. Air total: $1,209.

Greyhound roundtrip runs you about $811. Checking a second bag for two adults will cost $40. Bus total: $851.

There's no train itinerary available to get you there by Thanksgiving dinner.

Drive the 555 miles for about $150 in gas roundtrip. Add in roughly $160 in meals. Driving total: $310.

3. Los Angeles-Portland, Ore.
Alaska Airlines tickets will cost the family about $1,949 roundtrip. One checked bag per person each way is $120 roundtrip. Want food on the flight? A picnic pack including salami, cheese, crackers, apple sauce and energy-drink mix runs $48 roundtrip. Air total: $2,117.

Greyhound gets you there for about $874 roundtrip. Another $40 for the bag fees. Bus total: $914.

The train costs $999 roundtrip, plus about $150 for meals if you buy them on board during the nearly 24-hour ride each way. Train total: $1,149.

Driving probably won't work for most people, since it is 964 miles each way.

Consider an RV
For those so fed up with tarmac delays, lost baggage and other hassles, you might consider renting an RV for your Thanksgiving trip.

Jon Tancredi, a spokesman for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, says the homes on wheels mean no lost luggage, missed connections or less-than-helpful gate agents.

“There's no charge for baggage, movies or boxed lunches,” he says. “Heck, there are no boxed lunches, as RVers have a gourmet kitchen in tow.”

Take traveling from Pittsburgh to Lancaster, Pa., as an example.

The group estimates that the cost over three days for a family of four driving the 238-mile trip in a motor home would be $846, including rental charges, fuel, meals and campsite fees. The rental charges alone run about $180 a day.

Emergency landings: how we should behave

Even considering the fact that you may have never faced a situation where an emergency landing was the only solution, the truth is that you can't denny that it is a reallity that can easily menace us if we don't know how to behave in those situations. Keeping this in mind, I would like to advise you to take some time to read the msnbc.com article just below so that you can start preparing yourself for those situations:

" DENVER - Aviation officials say a United Airlines flight declared an emergency shortly before landing in Denver with total hydraulic failure.

Flight 418 from San Diego had to be towed to a gate to allow passengers to deplane.

Denver International Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon says the plane landed normally and that no injuries were reported. He says firefighters were waiting along the runway, which is standard procedure when an "Amber Alert" is declared after a pilot reports that there may be a problem with the landing.

"

The best pain relief solution

Just as you would expect from a certified businesswoman who tends to work afterhours, I often end up facing some unpleasant musculoskeletal pain that has often affected my productivity at the company, leading to some less productive days that have probably affected all the company, giving my current status on that same company.

Keeping this in mind, I have been recently looking for the best musculoskeletal pain relief solution and I came up with Egoscue Inc., which is a pain management clinic that tends to use the most effective Egoscue Methos program that you will ever find and which doesn’t involve the use of drugs or any kind of manipulation or surgery. As a matter of fact, Egoscue Methos only involves a series of stretches and gentle egoscuecises ("e-cises") that will vary from person to person, depending on the specific cases and current situations of the patients.

So, have you been facing some major musculoskeletal pain over the last few years and would you like to put an end to that without taking drugs or surgeries? If that’s the case, then I am more than sure that you will find the clinic above extremely helpful for you as their effective techniques will give you all the pain relief that you have always needed.

Have you ever been in Vienna before? Would you personally say that you didn't found anything special there? If that's the case, then you definitely need to read the msnbc.com article just below and discover how incredibly surprising Vienna may be even for those who have already been there:

"

VIENNA - Sachertorte. Magnificent palaces. Splendid museums. When Phillip Kalantirsky had his fill of Vienna the Opulent, he stayed on for a taste of Vienna Noir — in a walking tour built around the cult film "The Third Man."

"I'm obsessed with the movie," the 37-year-old lawyer from New York said on a recent afternoon as he and his wife waited for the tour to start. "Most old films are very dated, you don't buy into them. 'The Third Man' is different."

Kalantirsky's fascination with the film — set and partly shot in postwar Vienna — is shared by many. Six decades after "The Third Man" premiered in London in September 1949, tourists from around the world pound the Austrian capital's pavements — and even slip into its sewers — to see where the much-acclaimed motion picture was set. Fans can choose from the walking tour or the underground tour, visit a museum devoted to the movie, or even watch it in a theater.

Starring Orson Welles, the film tells the story of Holly Martins, a naive and broke American writer who investigates what appears to be the mysterious death of his old friend, Harry Lime, in a Vienna replete with rubble and racketeers, divided into zones run by the Western allies and the Soviet Union. Before long, he discovers that Lime is not dead but rather wrapped up in the trafficking of stolen, diluted penicillin, a scheme that has crippled and killed children.

Based on a screenplay by Graham Greene and directed by Carol Reed, the film is set to haunting Viennese zither music that's instantly familiar yet also unsettling — the perfect accompaniment for a noir film.

While "The Third Man" won an Oscar and grand prize of the Cannes Film Festival, it was less of a hit in Vienna, with locals unappreciative of the portrayal of the city's residents as grasping and cowardly. But with "The Third Man" wildly popular elsewhere, the Austrian capital now offers an array of attractions based on the movie.

Aside from the aboveground walking tour, film fans can delve into the city's underworld by descending into its extensive sewer system to see where Lime met his dramatic demise, shot to death by Martins.

Those with an aversion for damp and dingy surroundings can spend hours in a private museum crammed with photos, posters and other paraphernalia that grew out of a collector's love for all things related to "The Third Man."

The collection includes a tribute to the soundtrack's composer and performer, Anton Karas, who became a star in his own right. An audio terminal lets visitors sample more than 400 covers of the movie's theme music, including a version by The Beatles.

And for film neophytes or connoisseurs in need of a refresher or quick fix, the city's Burg cinema holds screenings three to four times a week.

Even on a recent balmy Sunday, while others enjoyed the weather, about two dozen people filed into the theater.

"It's a masterpiece," said Brian Davis, a 28-year-old tourist from Los Angeles, on his way in.

Cinema owner Kurt Schramek says the screenings are well-attended.

"The film is interesting for visitors because it was shot on location," Schramek said. "For some, it has become a bit of a tradition to go see it."

For others, such as Herbert Halbik, the movie evokes childhood memories.

The humble 64-year-old played Hansl in the film, the mischievous and chubby-cheeked boy who accuses Holly Martins of murdering Harry Lime's porter.

"I think the film is great, it's definitely one of the best," said Halbik, who played the part as a 3-year-old and now runs a tobacco shop. While he doesn't recall much of the shooting of the film, a trip to London to tape studio scenes sparked his lifelong love for orange marmalade.

"It was so unusual, you couldn't get it in Austria for years," he said with a chuckle during a recent interview, evoking postwar shortages that led to the kind of smuggling the film touches on.

Experts say the movie is more than just entertainment.

Brigitte Timmermann, an Austrian historian who spent a decade researching the production, describes it as an educational tool about life in the Austrian capital at the cusp of the Cold War.

"Graham Greene, as a former spy, was a very accurate observer, which makes the film an excellent documentation of the time," said the author of an extensive book titled "The Third Man's Vienna: Celebrating a Film Classic."

Timmermann, who has given walking tours for 20 years and often hosts student groups, said the movie continues to appeal to people from around the world because it is "tangible."

"There aren't too many films in which a city takes center stage," Timmermann said, adding that people from as far afield as the United States, Australia and Japan take her guided walks. Even former servicemen have shown up for her 2.5-hour trek through town.

"These people want to take the tour so badly they don't care if it's raining or if it's 17 below freezing," she said.

Peter Brunette, an expert on European film and a professor of film studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, enjoyed taking a "Third Man" tour while in Vienna for its annual film festival, the Viennale. He says the movie remains compelling thanks to superb acting, rich black-and-white cinematography, and the contrast it offers between "our idea of Old Europe" and Vienna's "dark underbelly."

"The world is corrupt and in fact people are evil," Brunette said, summing up the film's world-weary, existentialist tone. "There's a deliciousness to that."

Surprising passenger bills

As a traveler who knows how surprising some trips are when we look at the bills that we get, I am experienced enough to sustain the theory that everyone must be prepared for one of those major bills that tend to surprise us sometime in our lives! Keeping this in mind, read the msnbc.com article just below and discover how you must deal with those situations:

"

—Airfarewatchdog wonders how many potential airline customers are refusing to fly until they can be assured that they won’t be trapped in a cramped airplane parked overnight on a tarmac. Every time another news story appears detailing the suffering of passengers in such situations, with no food or working lavatories, no doubt another few hundred flyers take to their cars and Greyhound.

Talk about negative publicity! So if only to avoid more bad press, you’d think the airlines would be behind two bills currently before the U.S. Congress designed to give airline passengers some peace of mind.

In truth, “only” about 200,000 U.S. airline passengers were stuck on a tarmac in the first half of the year (although this figure doesn’t include international flights or those on smaller regional aircraft).

The airlines note that this works out to an infinitesimally small percentage considering how many people they fly each year, but tell that to those unfortunate enough to have sat in a cardboard-thin seat surrounded by crying babies for 8 hours, with nothing to eat or drink.

And don’t use that logic on Kate Hanni, a victim of one of the more celebrated tarmac delays of recent years, and executive director of Flyersrights.org, the principal advocacy group behind the flyers rights movement. “If the problem is so small,” she said at a recent hearing sponsored by her group and the Business Travel Coalition, “then solving it shouldn’t be so bad.”

The two “passenger rights” bills, HR 624 in the House, and S 213 in the Senate, state that if a flight is “substantially” delayed, the airline must provide “adequate” food and water, “adequate” restroom facilities, cabin ventilation and comfortable cabin temperatures, and access to medical treatment.

After a delay of three hours during which the passengers have been unable to deplane, the airline must provide passengers the option of returning to the terminal if this can be done safely.

But there are some problems here. Most airlines no longer provide food on flights, except for business or first class passengers. So it’s not clear how they’ll be able to provide nourishment during a long delay. Does Pizza Hut deliver to airport tarmacs?

As for returning to the terminal in a “safe” manner, that’s a rather substantial loophole. If there are no available gates for a delayed aircraft to use, how will the passengers get off? They can’t simply jump out the emergency slides and walk to the terminal.

And if the pilot determines that deplaning would jeopardize passenger safety or security, then no deplaning.

There is no language in the bills specifying what penalties might be assessed for failure to adhere to the proposed regulations. So this could be a bill without bite.

Plus, as the two bills recognize, airports have to be part of the solution. They need to develop operating plans to handle unscheduled deplanings, including a way to safely transport passengers from the tarmac or taxiway to the terminal if no gates are available.

Some airports, such as Dallas-Fort Worth, are planning to add buses with mobile stairways to meet planes and carry passengers to terminals. DFW has also designated two terminal gates for unscheduled deplanings. But most airports don’t have this equipment, and without a workable plan any passenger rights bill that emerges from Congress may amount to nothing more than good intentions.

Airplanes arriving from international destinations that are diverted to airports without customs and immigration facilities propose another issue that must be considered.

Needless to say, the airline industry, and the Airline Transport Association, its trade group, aren’t thrilled. They argue that a passenger rights bill will have “unintended consequences,” forcing airlines to cancel flights at a time when capacity cuts make it less likely that their customers will find convenient alternatives.

Aircraft that go back to the gate for deplaning lose their place in line for take off, industry insiders note, causing further delays; others argue that this policy should be changed, allowing such aircraft to regain their takeoff priority.

And other industry observers, such as the University of Michigan’s Amy Cohn, suggest that tarmac delays are a symptom, not the disease. These delays wouldn’t happen so often, they say, if the U.S. air traffic control system weren’t stuck in the 1960s. It needs to be modernized so that more aircraft can share limited air space.

Delays could also be reduced if the FAA restricted the number of takeoffs and landings at the nation’s most crowded airports, such as Chicago O’Hare and New York’s LaGuardia and JFK. JFK has slots for 81 operations per hour, but averages 126.

But who knows: Now that airlines are eliminating flights and parking hundreds of jets in the desert, this problem might just go away.

The perfect opportunity to discover Colorado

Have you ever been to Colorado before? Would you recommend it to other travelers? Well, even if you have never been there before, I am more than sure that you have already heard some amazing stories about the great adventures that many travelers had there. In fact, read the msnbc.com article just below and discover how incredibly easy it will be for you to discover Colorado:

"

DENVER - People who have never seen snow or built a snowman are getting a chance to do it in Colorado, in a big way.

The Colorado Tourism Office launched a contest Monday to give three "snow virgins" an expenses-paid, three-month trip to Colorado, January through March. With help from local instructors and guides, contest winners will sample winter activities like snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, the all-important apres ski cocktail hour, maybe even ice climbing — and then they'll describe their experiences on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Winners also will visit Colorado restaurants, hot springs and spas.

Applicants are asked to submit videos to snowatfirstsight.com explaining why they should win. People can visit the Web site to vote, and 10 finalists will get trips to Colorado to audition.

The Colorado Tourism Office is spending about $150,000 on the contest. That's less than the $250,000 it spent on a promotion last year to erect a virtual ski hill and "bring Colorado" to New York City.

The office's budget was cut from $20 million last year to $15 million this year as the state tried to close a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall. Tourism officials hope the new contest builds buzz for Colorado on social media networks, with contest winners posting daily updates.

The idea is to show Colorado through the contest winners' fresh eyes, whether they're from the U.S. or not, tourism office director Kim McNulty said.

Contest organizers figure entrants might be students, job seekers, retirees or those who can arrange for time off work — basically the crowd that might go on a reality TV show.

The winners will stay at spots around the state. Exact locations were still being confirmed.

Still, after years of use, many parts from our cars need to be replaced and it is extremely important that we replace the old parts with new certified ones that can really continue to guarantee us all the reliability that we will ever need as travelers who love to travel by car. Moreover, as I have some Mercedes-Benz cars at home, I have recently been told to have a look at these OEM and aftermarket diesel turbocharger parts so that I could save hundreds of dollars while also making sure that my cars will continue to provide me with some amazing trips all around the country.

Discovering the Holy Land in Washington D.C.

Even if you you are not one of those persons who tends to spend many hours doing everything possible in order to follow the "rules" of your religion, the truth is that you may still be surprised with the amazing places that you can find right next to you! In fact, read the msnbc.com article just below and see how you can easily be surprised:

"

WASHINGTON - On a Christian pilgrimage with her church group, Kristin Toorop looks up to Calvary and her eyes open wide.

She listens as tour guide Gloria Harrington tells the story of where Christ was crucified, with Mary Magdalene kneeling at his feet.

"I'm sure you recognize the scene of Jesus on the cross, between two thieves," Harrington says, before leading the group to take a closer look. "Let's go up to Calvary."

But this is not the sacred Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, where Christian tradition says Jesus was crucified and resurrected. Rather, it's a replica of Calvary, hidden in a leafy neighborhood in Washington.

For nearly 112 years, Mount St. Sepulchre in D.C. has been home to a Franciscan monastery and its Memorial Church of the Holy Sepulcher — complete with replicas of Jesus' tomb and other holy sites. About 25,000 people visit each year to see its shrines representing the holiest places in Christianity.

During her first visit in October, Toorop, a 43-year-old accountant from Philadelphia, said she was more than impressed.

"To be honest, I think this place is better than the National Cathedral," she said, walking through the Byzantine-style church located across town from the well-known Episcopal cathedral that often hosts presidents and national events.

"This place is more spiritual," Toorop said. "I feel closer to Jesus and to his story and to the pain and suffering he went through because there's these relics here."

Her pilgrimage to the church with a busload of parishioners from Nativity of Our Lord Church in Warminster, Pa., came on the same day the Franciscan Order celebrated a remarkable moment — its 800th anniversary. The order was founded by St. Francis of Assisi, who traveled to Rome in 1209 to ask the pope's approval.

"They wanted to live the Gospel as literally as they could," said Father Jeremy Harrington, who heads the Washington monastery. That includes a simple life, serving others, with no real worldly possessions of their own.

Hundreds of friars have passed through the D.C. monastery over time, often in preparation to serve in the Holy Land where Franciscans serve as the Catholic Church's chief custodians of the holiest sites. It's also the place where Good Friday collections from all U.S. Catholic churches are sent before the Vatican distributes the money to support the Franciscans' work.

In the Holy Land, they try to foster peace and reconciliation among Muslims, Jews and other groups, Harrington said. They also strive to make the Gospel accessible to people in the tradition of St. Francis.

Harrington, 77, dressed in the friar's traditional brown robe, serves as guardian and commissary of the monastery. He's one of 20 who live there full-time, celebrating Mass twice daily and meeting together for morning and evening prayer. Other priests stay for shorter periods while studying at nearby Catholic University of America.

"We are the supply line for the friars in the Holy Land," Harrington said. "We recruit men to become Franciscans and go to serve there. We support them emotionally, spiritually and financially."

Their church is filled with intricate works of art and the unique to-scale replicas of various sites.

The site dates to 1897 when Father Godfrey Schilling purchased an old farm estate to build the monastery and church. He had returned from serving in the Holy Land and wanted to offer Americans a glimpse of those sites that many would never see in person.

Architect Aristide Leonori was hired to design the building, which was made in the shape of a Crusader Cross of Jerusalem. It incorporates the Byzantine style with Italian Romanesque elements.

Leonori also visited the Holy Land to take measurements and photographs of sites that were to be reproduced inside the church. Several artists created the colorful paintings, mosaics, stained glass and statues that adorn the altars and walls.

The details are exacting. The Altar of Calvary, for example, is set high in the church to show the actual height of Mount Calvary. Tour guides at the church said Jesus' body was taken to a tomb located the exact distance across the church where a replica of the tomb is situated. Stone from the real tomb in Jerusalem was sent for use in the D.C. replica, they said.

"I've never been over to the Holy Land. I've never traveled," said Debbie Schultheis, 41, a recent visitor from the Warminster, Pa., church. "But this gives you a nice documentation of Jesus' life."

On the basement level, visitors find replicas of the shrine at Nazareth dedicated to the Annunciation — when Mary learned she would bear the child of God — and the nativity in Bethlehem where Jesus was born.

There are also replicas of the catacombs in Rome with altars holding the real remains of St. Benignus, a second-century martyr put to death by the Roman emperor, and the body of St. Innocent, a child martyr, to show the persecution of early Christians.

Outside, the monastery's expansive gardens are filled with colorful roses and more replicas depicting the garden of Gethsemane, the tomb of the Virgin Mary, the Portiuncula Chapel that St. Francis restored and other sites.

The monastery is contemplating an expansion that could include private, solitary retreats on the wooded areas of its grounds to offer a place for prayer and reflection.

"That's our life," Harrington said, "to be people of peace."

Keeping your home safe when traveling all around the world

Even considering the fact that you may feel extremely confident about your neighbourhood and how secure your home is when you decide to travel all around the world, the truth is that you must always be conscious that it is possible that you may end up facing a major surprise when you get home. Therefore, read the msnbc.com article below and discover how you can stay protected:

"
By Caroline Costello

Murphy's Law for travelers: If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong while you're on vacation — which is arguably the worst time a household calamity can strike. Coming home from your honeymoon, African safari or Mediterranean cruise can be melancholic. But returning from a memorable journey and learning something has gone seriously wrong at home can be downright devastating.

To make matters worse, a house or apartment left empty while its owners are traveling is a tempting target for criminals. We don't want to scare you — or leave you fearing for your treasured belongings while basking on a Caribbean beach. But it's imperative that every traveler take certain key steps to keep his or her home safe and sound while seeing the world. Simple preventative measures (which take only minutes to complete) can work wonders to help you avoid power surges, broken pipes, home invasions and more.

1. Ask a friend to help
A simple, albeit crucial, way to gain peace of mind while traveling is to ask a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house while you're away. First, bribe your friend with some freshly baked cookies or cupcakes. Next, ask him or her to drive by your home once every day or so and check on the place. Give this person a key so that he or she can bring your mail in, feed your cat, water your plants, rake your leaves, etc. If you don't use a garage, you may also want to give this person a key to your car — you never know when your car may need to be moved. He or she should also have your contact information and a copy of your itinerary in case of emergencies. Do you have more than one person visiting your house while you're away? If so, tell them about each other! If the watchful neighbor you asked to keep an eye on your abode calls the police on your elderly cat sitter, don't say we didn't warn you.

2. Don't tip off criminals with twitter
In a world where it seems everyone is blabbing about their business on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, it's important to stop and think: who exactly is reading this stuff? The anonymity of the Internet can encourage us to share personal information without fully realizing that there may be hundreds of complete strangers receiving our daily musings. Would you announce to a crowd that you will be leaving your house unattended for two weeks this December? If not, then you should think twice about posting your detailed vacation plans on Twitter or Facebook — especially if that information is visible to Internet users other than your friends and family (and it probably is). Change your house phone message as well. Callers don't need to know that you're not home — they just need to know that you can't come to the phone right now.

3. Do tip off the police
Always notify the police if you're going on vacation. No need to let the cops know about a weekend getaway, but do call them if you're leaving town for a week or more. It's possible the police may go out of their way to drive by your house while on patrol, especially if you live in a small town. You may also want to contact your local neighborhood watch program if there's one in your area.

4. Curtains closed — or open?
Before you leave for vacation, you may decide to close your curtains to prevent people from peering inside your home and determining whether or not you're there. However, closed curtains also stop those who aim to help — the police, your neighbors or friends — from seeing inside your house. So what's your best bet? Leave your curtains exactly as you usually keep them when you're home, since noticeable changes could hint that you're not around anymore — especially if your curtains are uncharacteristically left closed for two weeks. Be sure to move expensive items, such as jewelry or cash, away from plain sight if they're visible from the window.

5. The lights are on but no one's home
Don't leave your lights on at home throughout your entire vacation in an effort to make it look like someone is in the house. Your electric bill will end up more costly than your mortgage, and, of course, leaving the lights on is not exactly “green” behavior. Plus, house lights blazing throughout the night might look a bit odd, no? Instead, purchase a light switch timer that can turn your lights on and off automatically according to a programmed schedule. Criminals keeping an eye on your house will notice lights flipping on and off, and will probably assume someone is doing the flipping. Nextag.com offers a comprehensive list of light switch timers available for sale online. Timers start at $8 (although more quality timers are priced around $16 and up).

6. Stop your mail
Either place a “stop” order on mail and newspapers (we also recommend this in 10 things to do before you leave home), or arrange to have a friend or neighbor pick up your mail while you're away. Otherwise, a week's worth of letters piled on your front step could signal to criminals that a certain homeowner is out of town. It's easy to put your mail on hold; that's why there's no excuse not to do this. Just go to the United States Postal Service Web site and you can place a “stop” order in a matter of minutes.

7. Put that in your pipe
If you live in a cold region of the world and your pipes are in danger of freezing during winter, you have another compelling reason to leave a house key with a friend while you're traveling. Ask your friend to stop by and check your faucets. If he or she turns on a faucet and only a few drops of water come out, your pipes may be frozen. Take other precautions like making sure your pipes are properly insulated or keeping your heat on while you're away. Show your key-bearing companion the location of the water main shut-off in case a pipe breaks. For more information about preventing and treating frozen pipes, visit Prepare.org.

8. Pull the plug
Unplug your television, computer, toaster oven and other appliances to protect them from power surges. Do this to save power as well. According to the Consumer Energy Center, many appliances use power even when they're turned off.

9. Remove your spare key
That plastic rock isn't fooling anyone. If a criminal figures out you're away on vacation, it's likely that he or she will check your porch for a spare key. So reach under the mat, into the mailbox, above the door frame or into the flower pot and remove your spare key. Besides, if you're locked out when you come back from vacation, you could end up having a beer with the president!

Top wine destinations in America

Even if you are not a fan of wine and all the magic around it, the truth is that there is a lot to be discovered at the top American wine destinations that you have probably never heard about! In fact, as soon as you read the msnbc.com article just below, you will know that America holds some amazing places where wine is currently being produced:

"

NEW YORK - European destinations are often in the spotlight when it comes to fine wines but North America holds it own when it comes to varietals, according to travel Web site TripAdvisor.

Editors at TripAdvisor have compiled a list of North America's top 10 wine destinations after noticing a 10 percent rise in searches for "vineyards" over the past six weeks compared to a year ago.

A survey of more than 1,000 U.S. respondents found 48 percent planned to visit a U.S. vineyard this year, with 40 percent planning to do so this autumn. When it comes to taste, 59 percent prefer red wine, 43 percent want white and 12 percent rose.

1. Napa Valley, Calif.
The undisputed American capital of wine has earned its reputation thanks to seemingly endless picturesque vineyards and world-class wines. The valley's scenery serves as the backdrop to both amazing large-scale wineries as well as smaller wineries.

2. Sonoma, Calif.
Protected by mountains from excessive rainfall, Sonoma has an ideal climate for growing grapes on its numerous vineyards. Napa's neighbor is smaller in terms of wine production, but has highly sought-after wines and sweeping vistas.

3. Willamette Valley, Ore.
Oregon produces far less wine than its Californian counterparts, but distinguishes itself for its outstanding pinot noirs and other varietals. Willamette Valley, one of Oregon's major wine-growing regions, has more than 200 charming wineries.

4. Yakima Valley, Wash.
The oldest wine region in Washington, diverse Yakima Valley can grow many varietals, including chardonnay and shiraz. Nearly half of the wine produced in Washington begins with Yakima Valley grapes, but the Valley is also home to orchards bearing a wide range of fruits.
