Learning something new about history

When thinking about the things that you love to do in your life, you probably end up choosing a few like traveling around the world, watching some amazing movies and listen to some good music… Still, I have another passion: history!

Keeping this in mind, I recently heard about the holodomor and I believe that most of you have never heard about it, right? As a matter of fact, there are many events on the Soviet Union that are historical and which we have never heard about simply because we don’t learn everything at school! Moreover, we often end up noticing that the main reason why they don’t talk about some historical events on school is simply because we aren’t supposed to know too much about them and why could that be? A different cruise...

For those lovers of cruises, do you honestly think that there shouldn't be any advances on the next travels and the next programs?

On a seemingly perfect cruise, retirees Sol and Arline Bernstein set sail on a November Mediterranean cruise on Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess. The couple was celebrating Sol’s 80th birthday in grand fashion by touring Europe’s most famous sites from Rome to Istanbul.

But it all came to an unceremonious end after two weeks at sea when bad weather forced Grand Princess to delay docking seven hours at Civitavecchia, Italy — Rome’s homeport. The West Palm Beach, Fla., couple boarded a bus to get them to Rome’s airport. But they arrived too late for their flight home and the Delta Air Lines representative told the couple it would cost them $250 per ticket in transfer fees, plus the fare difference to get on flights the following day. What was the fare difference? A whopping $1,414 per ticket. Tack on several hundred dollars to stay in Rome an extra day and the Bernsteins were looking at over $3,000 in added expenses to their trip.

Every year when I update my guidebook series, I find out what's new in Europe. Here's a review of what Americans can expect the next time they cross the Atlantic. Note that this is a continent-wide look at the latest in Europe. In upcoming columns, I'll cover what's new per major country.

In 2009, it's not the “old Europe” anymore as countries continue to open up their borders. Several Eastern European countries, including Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Baltic States, have recently done away with border controls for travel within Europe. This means you can now go from country to country without stopping to show your passport. Switzerland plans to join in as early as March.

Clean air has come to once-smoky Europe. Trains used to have both smoking and nonsmoking compartments, but now entirely smoke-free cars are standard in much of Europe. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on trains in Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Norway, Sweden or Poland. Smoking areas (clearly marked) are still offered on some trains in Spain, Denmark, Finland and most of Eastern Europe."

Ice cruises

Have you ever thought about the idea of taking part in a cruise that goes around some of the coldest places in the world?

A cruise ship carrying nearly 400 people has been stuck in thick ice in the St. Lawrence River in Eastern Canada for over a day, but passengers are nonetheless having a “festive” time, the company that owns the vessel said Tuesday.

The ship, CTMA-Vacancier, chartered by a group traveling from Montreal to the Gaspe Peninsula for a cross-country skiing trip to celebrate the 475th anniversary of the region's settlement, is now inching through the heavy ice, said Leonard Arsenault, a spokesman for MTMA Group.

A Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker that was already in the area tried to assist the ship, but was also having difficulty getting through the thick ice, Arsenault said.

A new concept of travel

Now that the winter is almost over and keeping in mind that it is about time to get some days off to relax, I am already planning my next trip to Pasadena and I am really excited about the whole idea!
