Pamplona: are you ready for the adventure?

Even considering the fact that when we travel, people tend to look for relaxing moments or adventures in the wild, the truth is that there are also some spots in Europe that offer us some amazing adventures. One of those cases is definitely Pamplona as you may discover by reading the msnbc.com article just below:

"

PAMPLONA, Spain - Daredevils sprinting with one-ton fighting bulls swallow an exhilarating cocktail of adrenaline and fear. Now, a new source of jitters has emerged: the global recession has snorted some of the bullishness out of one of the world's great fiestas.

Don't bother asking the tens of thousands of revelers who kicked off Pamplona's running of the bulls Monday with a traditional rocket-firing ceremony outside town hall. They're too busy drinking beer or wine or cleaning off the flour, eggs or ketchup they hurled at each other to get the eight-day San Fermin festival off to a merry and messy start.

"People throwing sangria everywhere. It is just unbelievable," said Ricky Birmingham, a 20-year-old from Australia.

Adds 20-year-old Theo Franzen of Sweden: "It is nice, but kind of scary."

No, it is mainly merchants who are feeling the pinch of the world's economic downturn. Rates on hotel rooms are down because of slacker demand, big-spending American and other foreign visitors are harder to find, and bars that usually make a killing off hordes of thirsty patrons from around the globe expect to serve up less booze.

The leaner times are visible elsewhere, too. The Pamplona city hall has cut its budget for the festival by more than 10 percent, to 2.5 million euros ($3.5 million). And two Spanish TV networks that had been bickering over rights to broadcast the morning bull runs have agreed to do it jointly to save on costs.

With Spain's economy in recession and saddled with 17.4 unemployment, and much of the world also in dire straits, here in Pamplona a sobering new reality has set in. The party is far from over, but it might be watered down this time.

"We thought San Fermin would always fill up," said local entrepreneur Mikel Ollo. "We created a fictitious bubble, and that bubble has burst."

Ollo runs a company called Incoming Navarra, which organizes VIP packages for San Fermin visitors, arranging posh accommodations, front-row views of the runs from balconies overlooking the route, a personalized tour guide to explain what they are seeing, breakfast while they watch and myriad other forms of pampering.

The price depends on what the client wants to do but last year, for instance, one customer dished out 4,000 euros a day, Ollo said. In general the service costs about 700 euros ($980) to 1,000 euros ($1,400) a day. It was particularly popular among people from the U.S., Russia and France.

"They are clients with lots of buying power. In the last few years, fewer have come but the ones that do spend more," he said.

Now, however, with demand slumping, the company has devised a scaled-down package with a hotel room and a separate balcony along the route, for 155 euros ($217) a day.

"Obviously, it is not the same level of attention as in the VIP package, but it is a very good deal," Ollo said.

The hotel occupancy rate in general is expected to be about 90 percent, similar to last year, but for the first time in years rooms are going for as little as 90 euros a night, especially on the city outskirts, said Nacho Calvo of the Navarra Restaurant and Hotel Association.

"Rates have come down a lot and the weakness of the dollar against the euro is taking its toll on tourism," he said.

Pamplona has around 4,000 hotel rooms, about a third of which fill up with foreigners flocking to get a taste of the festival that inspired Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises." Many are New Zealanders, French, Australian or American.

At Casino Eslava, a famed bar near a hostel where Hemingway often stayed during visits to San Fermin, co-owner Ricardo Ubanell said things have been slow since last year and he expects his cash register to take another hit.

"Our expectations are lower because of the crisis, no doubt about it," he said.

Nonetheless, he has hired nine extra waiters to handle the influx of partiers and ordered just as much alcohol as previous years, although other outlets are scaling back in anticipation of leaner spending.

JetAmerica discount airline delayed

Just as you know, airlines are really doing their best in order to attract and increasing number of clients so that they can also face the current financial downturn with all the confidence. Keeping this in mind, many airlines are already making some major discounts as you may read on the msnbc.com article below:

"

NEWARK, New Jersey - A fledgling discount airline is having trouble getting off the ground.

Clearwater, Fla.-based JetAmerica issued a statement Thursday saying it's delaying the start of flight operations a month. It cited problems securing landing and takeoff slots at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

It's refunding about $500,000 in credit card purchases by more than 6,400 customers.

JetAmerica had planned to offer 34 flights a day starting July 13 to Newark and Minneapolis and to underserved airports in Melbourne, Florida; Toledo, Ohio; Lansing, Michigan; and South Bend, Indiana.

Its new projected start date is Aug. 14.

Have you ever been surprised by an amazing bill?

During the holidays, people tend to spend more time then they normally do and they often try to add some glamour to their lives that they don't normally get! Keeping this in mind, we are often surprised with the enormous bills that are often presented to us. As you may read on the msnbc.com article below, that was exactly what happened to another group of tourists:

"

ROME - They were looking for a bit of La Dolce Vita but what two Japanese tourists got in a restaurant in Rome left a bad taste in their mouths.

The couple was handed a $980 restaurant bill after lunch last month at a restaurant just steps away from Piazza Navona. The bill included a $160 tip they say they didn't agree to, Rome police said Thursday.

The case made headlines in national newspapers, reportedly angering Mayor Gianni Alemanno. Police temporarily shut down the restaurant after the couple filed a complaint, said police official Michele Laratta.

Restaurant owner Franco Fioravanti told Italian newspapers that the couple looked satisfied when they left the Passetto restaurant, and that they ordered a lavish meal that included oysters, lobsters, sea bass and porcini mushrooms.

"If one wants to spend money, with us one can," Fioravanti told La Repubblica. "What's wrong with that?"

The couple — a 35-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman — filed their complaint a few days after their June 19 lunch at the posh century-old restaurant, Laratta said.

According to the couple's account to police, they sat outdoors and an English-speaking waiter offered to bring a few dishes without the couple's consulting the menu, Laratta said.

What followed was a $140 bottle of Sauvignon and a several-course extravaganza. Several national papers printed what they said was the receipt from the meal, which also showed pasta dishes for $280.

After the complaint, police checked the prices on the receipt against those on the menu the Japanese said they never saw, and found a major discrepancy. "They are way higher, quite a bit disproportionate," Laratta said.

Police also sent health inspectors, who found defective refrigerators, contamination among different foods and other below-standard procedures in the restaurant's kitchens, according to Laratta and news reports.

The restaurant was closed temporarily, and officials are also considering revoking the restaurant's license.

The Passetto restaurant was closed to the public Thursday and personnel inside refused comment to the AP.

The restaurant is a classic of Rome cuisine. Its Web site lists among its guests movie stars past and present — from Ava Gardner to Leonardo DiCaprio — as well as Queen Elizabeth, Grace Kelly and Salvador Dali.

Buying a new bed

As a woman who really loves to relax and enjoy some quiet during the day and not only at night, the truth is that when I choose my bed, I really bought it considering the fact that I would be taking some naps during the week! In fact, I love to sleep and it is vital that I sleep as much as possible so that I can always develop a quality work on the company.

Keeping this in mind, I am now considering the possibility of buying a new bed that is even more comfortable than mine and which looks more modern too! Personally, I believe that bedroom furniture also plays an important role when it comes the time to make our bedroom look modern and comfortable and that’s exactly why I often end up spending hours trying to find the best furniture that really adds something to my bedroom. Still, first of all I will have to choose my new bed and I have already picked up a few beds that I am considering to buy based on the fact that they are both comfortable and modern, as you may see on the images below:

So, do you like these beds and would you like to buy similar beds? If that’s the case, then I definitely recommend you to have a look at the website to which I have linked above and discover how easy it is to find a bed that we really love for the best price ever!

Taking your kids to NYC

When considering the fact that during the summer kids only want to go to the beach, how can we make them go to a city like NYC? Would you really like to go to NYC and need some advice on how to convince your children? If that's the case, then take some time to read the msnbc.com article below and discover how easy it could be:

"

Anyone who has ever tried to get any work done with young kids underfoot can only imagine what Harris Levine must have gone through — every day of his life.

The Polish immigrant tailor lived with his wife and three young children in three tiny rooms at 97 Orchard Street in New York City in the late 1890s — then one of the most densely populated places on earth. While Levine and three other helpers put dresses together (earning just 75 cents per dress), Mrs. Levine managed the household in the same 325-square-foot space boiling diapers, hauling laundry down several flights to hang outside, amusing the children and cooking. "It was amazing how they could all fit in such a small space," said 14-year-old Lee Gilbert, visiting with his family from Miami.

The chance to travel back to those days, visiting the Levine's apartment and several others, is yours for the asking at the Tenement Museum, which recreates the life of New York City immigrants between 1863 and 1935 when 97 Orchard Street was home to some 7,000 people from more than 20 nations.

"I'm so glad we visited," said Carolyn Gilbert Epstein, visiting New York from Miami with her mom and three children. "It is so authentic and personal and it is about families and we can all relate to it."

Today, the Tenement Museum is the only museum in the country to commemorate the history of urban immigrants — a tradition that, of course, continues to this day. The museum is a National Historic Landmark and a National Trust Historic Site.

We visit the Rogarshevsky's home where four brothers slept on a narrow couch in the front room, their feet on chairs, while their two sisters shared a folding cot. After her husband died of tuberculosis, Fannie Rogarshevsky traded janitorial services for free rent and was the last tenant to leave in 1935. (Little girls visiting might like the new books about Rebecca Rubin, which detail a young Jewish girl's 1914 immigrant experience. There is an American Girl Rebecca doll, as well.

On July 4, the Statue of Liberty's Crown is expected to re-open to the public — the first time since 9/11. At the same time, there is a new audio tour at Ellis Island, designed especially for kids using animated character voices. You can also celebrate your heritage by uploading your photograph to the American Flag of Faces.

Certainly visitors to New York have their pick of world-class and iconic sites — the Museum of Natural History with its new extreme mammals exhibit, The Metropolitan Museum of Art with its new American wing, two new Major League baseball stadiums, the Empire State Building and Central Park. (For more information, visit nycgo.com. For great value for major attractions, citypass.com.)

But there is a lot more to New York than the tourist track. Rent an apartment from an agency like nyhabitat.com and explore a local neighborhood. (Check out "Pauline Frommer's New York City Spend Less See More" guide.) In fact, vacation apartment rentals in NYC are the second most popular destination on homeaway.com, the premier online vacation rental site.

Opt for the Upper West Side in a cozy one-bedroom at the newly renovated Hotel Beacon or townhouse suites at the Pod Hotel in a residential eastside neighborhood for under $200 a night.

A visit to New York with kids, of course, wouldn't be complete without considering the immigrants who contribute so much to the city's life — kids in New York Public Schools speak more than 160 languages — and that means getting out of Manhattan! Consider that of the 8 million or so people who live in New York, only 1.5 million live in Manhattan. Get out and explore the other boroughs — the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, as well as lesser visited Manhattan neighborhoods and sites. (Sign on for a free neighborhood tour led by local volunteers, BigAppleGreeter.org.)

"People say they never knew NYC had neighborhoods like this," said my childhood friend Myra Alperson, who leads food-oriented tours in outlying city neighborhoods, which families love.

Take the free Staten Island Ferry for a first-rate view of the New York City skyline and check out The Hedge Maze in the Secret Garden at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and the Carousel for All Children at Willowbrook.

Head to Queens and the New York Hall of Science, which boasts the largest collection of hands-on science exhibits in the city (400!), but just opened Rocket Park Mini Golf to encourage kids and parents to explore science concepts —gravity, velocity — as they make their way through nine holes.

There's a lot more to the Bronx than the Bronx Zoo, as terrific as it is — like Wave Hill, the public garden and cultural center that offers family art projects and birding walks.

The Brooklyn Children's Museum, opened in 1899, was the first museum created expressly for children and, after its recent expansion, remains a showcase for what a children's museum can be. Check out exhibits like Wild About Plants, which lets families touch, smell, magnify, build, rebuild, watch and listen to plants — uncovering what they do for people and what people can do for them.

If tickets to see the Mets and Yankees are too pricey, take the kids to see the Minor League Staten Island Yankees or the Brooklyn Cyclones instead. You're bound to meet lots of local families.

Stop in at the FDNY Fire Zone where kids can try on firemen's gear, climb on the trucks and pose for pictures — at no charge. You'll meet a lot of local families at the brand-new High Line the one of a kind park built on the elevated, steel structure that originally carried freight trains. The first section runs from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, to West 20th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues.

"

Grab a hot pretzel from a street vendor to eat along the way.

The importance of meetings

Even considering the fact that I am a successful businesswoman who has never faced any major problems with narcotics, alcohol or anything similar, the truth is that I have some friends who did and still do! As a matter of fact, it is often difficult to help these friends and that’s exactly why it is extremely important that we always do our best in order to make them feel as members of the society.

Keeping this in mind, I have recently heard about InTheRooms Meetings, which is a top recovery website, where users are given the chance to become members of anonymous groups with other people that face the same problems, making them understand that they are not alone and giving them the opportunity to make some important new friends! Personally, I believe that this website is the best solution for anyone looking for Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Gamblers Anonymous (GA) meetings where they can get important advice. In fact, I am sure that my friends will definitely benefit as soon as I advise them to become members of these groups!

So, if you are also facing these problems or know someone who does, why don’t you also consider the possibility of letting that person know about InTheRooms meetings? Furthermore, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings are currently being worked on and should be completely scheduled by June 30th.

Sears Tower to attract more people

Do you love to see amazing architectural monuments and achievements and do you live near Chicago? If that's the case, then you definitely need to take some time to visit the Sears Tower and discover the new glass ledge that is surprising people as you may conclude by reading the msnbc.com article just below:

"

CHICAGO - The Sears Tower is offering a new way to push your fear of heights right over the edge.

A glass ledge, actually, suspended from the building's 103rd floor Skydeck.

“The Ledge” is the nickname given to a set of glass balconies that open to the public Thursday.

Sears Tower officials say the inspiration for the balconies came from the hundreds of forehead prints visitors left behind on Skydeck windows every week.

The glass is three layers thick, and each layer is a half-inch (1.3 centimeters) thick. The balconies can hold about five tons.

Other changes are on the way for the tallest building in the United States. They include its new name of Willis Tower and a $350 million green renovation for the 110-story skyscraper.
