A dangerous experience...

From what you are able to read on my blog, it’s pretty easy to conclude that I am one of those persons who always do everything possible in order to travel as much as possible! In fact, I am almost crazy about it and it feels as if I couldn’t live without it…

Still, apart from all the magnificent experiences that I had in the past and which make me certain that I must travel again and again, the truth is that there are also some bad experiences which make me freeze when I think about them! As you know, cities are getting more and more dangerous and when you also decide to go to Africa or Alaska to see animals really close to them, you are also menaced with their unexpected behavior and I am one of those persons who had a bad experience in the past with that.

It was about four years ago when I took my girlfriend to Alaska so that we could both witness the beauty of pure nature and the beautiful mountains there. We both went to a camp and eventually one day we decided that we should take some risk and spend one night in the mountains with some friends we have met there… The experience was great but while we all were sleeping, the sound made by a bear in the middle of the trees suddenly awakened us with scare! I mean, we were astonished by it and when we all started to wonder what we should do in such a situation, suddenly one member of the group simply said that we should stay calm and hope that the animal wouldn’t come because there was nothing that we could do apart from running! By that time, I really wished that I had a mace bear repellent so that we could use it to make the bear stay away from us… All I had with me was a pepper spray and it wouldn’t obvious work with a bear! I really hope that you don’t find yourself in such a situation…

Does a Safari scare you?

An African safari is a true adventure — a journey crafted in the tradition of wealthy 13th-century traders who first hunted the plains of Africa for wild game trophies to hang on their walls. Today, travelers hunt for photo opportunities instead of occasions to kill, but they encounter the same scenes that have fascinated explorers throughout history: thousands of zebras migrating across emerald grasslands, flocks of florescent flamingos creating a field of color across a shining soda lake, lions feasting on a hard-earned kill.

Many travelers trek to Africa in search of the "big five": buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinoceroses. The chance to get close to these animals in their natural habitats is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but your trip to the Africa is anything but a trip to the zoo. Safaris can be physically taxing and strenuous, and you may not see all the animals you expected. Since most safari destinations are in developing sub-Saharan nations, travelers must take certain safety and health precautions. If you're planning a safari (or just dreaming about it), be as prepared as possible. Get some good guidebooks, talk to friends who've been to Africa and research, research, research. We've outlined some important safari basics, from choosing a destination to getting vaccinated, to help you start planning a successful African adventure.

Types of safaris
For the most part, safaris are a costly kind of vacation. But as with any other type of travel, you can tailor your safari to suit your personal budget. The length of your safari will affect its cost — although you may want to cut your trip short to save cash, the longer you stay, the less you will probably pay on a per-night basis. If you're looking for luxury digs on your safari (or even just hot water and a comfy bed), prepare to pay more. Budget-minded adventurers should seek self-drive or overland safaris (see below) as opposed to all-inclusive package tours — but be prepared to camp in tents or navigate a 4x4 through the African bush. If you're traveling alone, you will probably have to pay a single supplement, as most package pricing is based on double occupancy.

Luxury safaris

A luxury safari offered by a well-known tour operator typically costs thousands of dollars per person, per week, with all-inclusive prices covering tours, food, drinks and excursions. Fully catered luxury packages offer travelers the comforts of home in wild Africa. Accommodations range from air-conditioned suites to stylish tents (you'll feel almost like you're camping — aside from the hot running water, rich linens and first-rate service). Ultra-luxurious safari lodges can cost over $1,000 a night.

Would you love to know more about wine?

Lucy did it. And you can, too — stomp grapes, that is. Wineries from Napa to New York are rolling out the barrel for those inclined to squish a little merlot between their toes.

"You get one person doing it and then everyone else is wanting to go along," says Ken Morris of the Grgich Hills Estate winery in the Napa Valley, where visitors can stomp daily during harvest.

The days when winemaking was done by the foot are long gone.

When it comes to in-flight comfort today, airlines are pretty much leaving passengers high and dry. JetBlue now charges $7 for a basic pillow and blanket kit (replete with "advanced technology" to shield you from dust mites and pollen—normally not a concern at 35,000 feet). And though they toss in a $5 coupon for Bed Bath & Beyond, a dubious incentive. The bottom line is, once in the sky, you’re on your own. Experts advise passengers to take control of their own comfort zones.

“Think about your flight as time spent camping out,” says Lynn Staneff, marketing director for Magellan’s, a purveyor of innovative travel supplies. “Airline services are going the way of the dinosaur and your comfort level depends entirely on you, so set up a household in your compressed seating area by packing everything you need in your carry-on." Staneff recommends her company's Revita-leg portable compression leg massage, which wraps around your calf and has several pressure settings, and light-weight headphones that turn your airplane seat into an oasis of tranquility.

Faced with a fuel price crisis, today’s airlines are more concerned with their bottom lines than your bottom. (“There’s a solution for that as well," says Stenef. She recommends Tush Wipes with aloe vera and vitamin E.) Head-to-toe, there are abundant choices for flyer who want to carry a personal pampering program.

Natural wonders will make you dream...

The earth is warming, glaciers are receding and oceans are changing. As a result, habitats are shrinking and species are dying — and many tourists want to see them before they disappear.

As scientists have studied and described the Earth's transformations, some more recent and rapid than others, their observations have given way to a phenomenon dubbed "doomsday tourism." The concept is simple: Travelers seek out imperiled destinations and try to experience their grandeur before they vanish.

The trend is best embodied by a surge in the number of travelers to the Galápagos Islands and Antarctica, both besieged by changes to their ecosystems.
